A boring new Tumblr meme! Get in on the ground floor!
I had a lot of stuff to do this weekend, so naturally I decided to organize my iTunes library by year and make a playlist with one song from each year, not chosen randomly but not terribly intentionally.
I didn’t use any mp3s that didn’t display a year in the metadata, even if I knew what year the album was from, and I didn’t use any songs that were showing a wrong year (like rereleases). I also didn’t repeat artists, though nearly all the early stuff is pulled from the same Story of Jamaican Music compilation. Those are just the rules I made up on the spot.
What I enjoyed seeing about the results was the juxtaposition between concurrent years; ‘girl group sounds’ tumbling almost immediately into Captain Beefheart, for example. And it was interesting to see what years are underrepresented and overrepresented in my library.
